Aten

A reference to the sun disc which was considered the life force and is closely related to the religious upheaval of Akhenaten.

Evidence such as the Great Hymn to the Aten shows not only that the god was regarded as being universal and transcendent, but also that the Aten’s position relative to the kind and his direct family was conceived in unique terms. Akhenaten and his queen Nefertiti served the god directly and, despite the existence of a dedicated priesthood of the Aten, Akhenaten alone was declared to have true knowledge of the god.
